Russia and United States Will Not Be Negotiating Peace in Ukraine Anytime Soon
Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov believes that there is no desire or will among Russian authorities to negotiate with the United States to end the conflict in Ukraine. According to a report by Russian state media outlet TASS, Peskov was asked if Tucker Carlson’s interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin could break the two countries’ diplomatic impasse with respect to Ukraine.
Peskov responded with the following: “The US authorities are well aware of our position, they are well aware of all Putin’s key messages.” “And they are well aware of how he treats [various issues] and what he things. This is not an issue of knowledge, but an issue of desire. A desire to do something to enter the negotiations track. So far, we have not registered such desire and political will [in the US],” Peskov added.
Putin’s interview with Tucker Carlson was published on February 9, 2024. A large segment of the interview was focused on the Ukrainian conflict, Russo-American relations, and Russia’s broader relations with NATO and the Collective West in general. Putin believes that the mood of the American ruling class, not so much those who occupy the presidency, are the ones who ultimately dictate the nature of Russo-American relations.
He stressed that the US’s hegemonic mindset prevents any form of normalization of relations between the countries. At the end of the day, Putin believes that if a new ruling class with realist foreign policy inclinations emerges, the two countries’ foreign policy direction would substantially change. The key here is that the US ruling class be changed for the better.
And that kind of scenario will be hard to bring about in the current political context.
