Russia Calls for Lifting Sanctions on Iran

On March 29, 2023, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called on the United States to reverse sanctions on Iran and go back into the 2015 nuclear deal. Lavrov stressed that there is no alternative to this agreement that Iran and world powers reached back in 2015.

Lavrov made these comments in a joint press conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Moscow.

“We talked about the situation around the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear program. We have a common understanding that there is no alternative to this international agreement, which was written down in the unanimously adopted UN Security Council Resolution 2231,” proclaimed Lavrov.

Lavrov emphasized that the US needs to scrap the anti-Iranian sanctions and noted that the globe is waiting for the US to abide by the original obligations set out by the nuclear deal.

Former US President Donald Trump got the US to exit the deal in May 2018 and slapped massive economic sanctions on Iran in what he described as the “maximum pressure” campaign.

Since Joe Biden was installed in office in 2021, there appears to be no sign of a US re-entry into this deal. Iran’s alleged support for Russia — in the form of supplying drones to it in Russia’s fight in Ukraine — has only diminished the chances of re-entry into this deal.

No matter how one slices it, sanctions on Iran have not worked whatsoever in terms of facilitating regime change or changing its geopolitical behavior. If anything, these sanctions have only incentivized Iran to strengthen its partnership with China and Russia.

That’s how things work in the multipolar order, and if the US can’t get hip to this trend, it will be in for a rude geopolitical awakening.
