Russia is Open to Constructive Relations With Pro-MAGA President of Argentina Javier Milei

On November 20, 2023, Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russia has paid close attention to what Argentina’s recently-elected president Javier Milei said on the campaign trail. The Russian government is waiting to see if Milei follows through with his words.

“We have paid attention to the many statements made by Mr. Milei during the election campaign, but mainly we will be guided and judge by what he says after the inauguration,” Peskov declared.

Peskov called attention to the following: “In particular, we are waiting for clarifications on many issues that will affect our bilateral relations.”

Per the spokesman, Russia respects the Argentine people’s choice here. He mentioned how Argentina is a very important country in South America and Russia has “quite good relations” with it. “We are in favor of further developing our bilateral relations,” Peskov stressed.

On November 19, Milei defeated his rival, Minister of Economy Sergio Massa by a 56% to 44% margin. Milei ran on a platform of limited government, sound money, and a plan to scrap the Argentine peso and replace it with the US dollar.

He has stressed that he has no desire of tightening relations with Brazil, China, and Russia owing to his disagreement with these states’ policies. That said, he will not bar businesses from doing businesses with the aforementioned countries. He views Israel and the US as Argentina’s leading allies. Per Milei’s Foreign Policy Advisor Diana Mondino, Milei sees no value in Argentina being involved in BRICS. Argentina was admitted to BRICS back in August during its summit.

Milei’s market reforms hold a lot of promise for Argentina, a country plagued by decades of prolonged inflation. If Argentina wants to become truly prosperous, it must apply Milei’s economic platform and ignore any temptation to become a puppet of the US’s geopolitical ambitions.
