Russian Leader Putin Says NATO is the United States’ Puppet

During an interview with Rossiya-1 TV journalist Pavel Zarubin, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a tool of the United States’ foreign policy.

“I believe that NATO is of no use at all anymore, there is no sense [in it]. There is only one point – it is an instrument of the US foreign policy,” Putin stated.

With respect to US President Donald Trump’s suggestion that European nations should pay the US for protection, Putin stated: “Let them sort it out by themselves; it’s their problem. Apparently, he [Trump] sees some logic in it. But from the Europeans’ point of view, there is none. They want the United States to continue exercising certain functions, which emerged when NATO was founded, free of charge.”

“If the United States believes that they don’t need this tool anymore, it will be their decision,” Putin added.

On February 10, Trump made waves during a speech in front of his supporters in South Carolina, where he recounted one of his meetings with NATO leaders. At the time, Trump claimed that one of the leaders asked him whether the US was prepared to defend the alliance in case of a potential attack from Russia if the country did not make contributions to NATO’s collective defense apparatus.

During this encounter with NATO leaders, Trump replied that he would not defend such a country and stressed that he, “would encourage them to do whatever the hell they [Russian authorities] want.”

No doubt about it, NATO is an institution that advances an agenda promoted by interest groups in the Anglo-American axis. There’s nothing genuinely Middle American about this alliance structure.

Hopefully, the next generation of Americans right-wing populists make this argument so that NATO can be thoroughly discredited among the American public.
