San Francisco Law Would Ban Individuals from Drawing Firearms to Stop Criminals

In recent years San Francisco had been rocked by all manner of crimes ranging from property to violent crime. Per crime statistics published by the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), the most common form of crime occurring in the city is larceny theft. The SFPD defines this crime as the “unlawful taking, carrying, leading, or riding away of property from the possession or constructive possession of another,” such as shoplifting.

This crime wave is not happening by coincidence. It’s the product of soft on crime policies such as the refusal to prosecute misdemeanors, the downgrading of felonies to misdemeanors, and bail reforms that kept criminals on the streets

San Francisco Supervisor Dean Preston, who is a self-described  “Democratic Socialist,” is putting forward legislation to prohibit retail security guards from unholstering a firearm to defend private property. He declared it is “entirely unacceptable that our local law includes drawing a weapon to respond to protecting property… We need to make sure that our local law is crystal clear that a security guard cannot draw a weapon to protect property.” A section of San Francisco’s Police Code, which was passed over four decades ago, currently bars any “armed guard” from drawing or brandishing “other than in a holster [,] any handgun except in lawful response to an actual and specific threat to person and/or property.”

What catalyzed the introduction of this new measure was the fatal shooting of Banko Brown, an alleged shoplifter, during a scuffle with a drugstore security guard, after the guard prevented Brown from leaving the store with stolen goods.

The guard claims that Brown repeatedly threatened to stab him, even though law enforcement did not discover  a knife on Brown’s person. San Francisco’s district attorney, Brooke Jenkins, refused to press criminal charges against the guard after an investigation found that he “acted in lawful self-defense when he fired his weapon at Brown.”

Sadly in the clown world state of American politics in Democrat-run cities, such soft on crime measures are the norm. These cities are total hellscapes for law-abiding citizens. It’s going to take a combination of fully restoring gun rights and implementing draconian anti-crime measures to set things straight in blue cities nationwide.
