Sell-Out Republican in Maine Wants to Impose Gun Control

Leroy G. Walker Sr., a Republican city council member in Auburn, Maine, wants to see restrictions imposed on firearms which can “rapidly fire.”

According to a Bangor Daily News (BDN) report, Walker’s son was killed in the October 25, 2023, Lewiston massacre in which a gunman used an AR-10 and an AR-15 to carry out this heinous attack.

After this massacre, Walker has called out Republicans who have routinely opposed additional gun controls, asserting they are “prolonging what needs to be done to slow these weapons down.”

In an NPR quote, Walker declared, “…There needs to be some way to control how these weapons are fired to kill people. One that can fire 30 or 60 or 90 shots off and to be able to kill people in seconds – that needs to change somehow.”

AWR Hawkins of Breitbart News, noted that semi-automatic rifles such as AR-10s and AR-15s fire off only one round per trigger pull. In effect, these rifles don’t have much of a difference as handguns such as Glock or Sig Sauer pistols or Ruger 10/22 rifles.

BDN highlighted how the Maine Gun Safety Coalition, a civilian disarmament organization, has used the Lewiston massacre as a springboard to advocate for broadening background checks to encompass private firearm sales. Hawkins observed that gun controllers in Maine “are doing this even though the attacker did not get his guns from a private source.”

Hawkins added that “Rather, he purchased them legally at retail, according to WBUR, which means he passed a background check.”

Maine is a middling state for gun rights. According to Guns & Ammo magazine’s most recent best states for gun owners rankings, Maine is ranked in 29th place

Although Maine passed Constitutional Carry in 2015, it has been wavering on the pro-gun issue. With Democrats in full control of the state, there’s no real prospect for pro-gun reforms to be passed.

If anything, the state will descend into an anti-gun path. However, with Republicans putting forward the aforementioned gun control measure, that kind of anti-gun descent will rapidly accelerate.

Gun owners in Maine will need to step up and ensure that all elected officials — irrespective of their party affiliation – abide by their duty to uphold their constitutional oath.
