Spain Is Unable to Provide Ukraine with F-16s & Pilot Training

On May 23, 2023, the Spanish government announced that it could not help Ukraine by supplying it with F-16 fighter jets or providing training to Ukrainian pilots to fly them.

Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles made the following announcement at a meeting of EU defense ministers at Brussels:

“Spain has F-18 [fighter jets] and Eurofighter, each combat plane has its own training dynamics. We cannot contribute to this training on F-16s. We will see how the issue of fighter planes will unfold.

The defense minister stressed that it previously sent 6 Leopard tanks to Ukraine. She noted that an additional 4 tanks would soon be sent to Ukraine because they are currently going through repairs.

Span is perhaps realizing that continuing the proxy war against Russia in Ukraine is not in its national interests. For one, Spain is far away from Russia so it faces no real threat from it like the way the Baltic states or other states in Eastern Europe do. Moreover, it’s also facing a similar energy crisis like countless other EU states due to the combination of bad green energy policies and energy sanctions .

Altogether, Spain would be wise to not continue fomenting a conflict that only benefits geopolitical with doctors in the United States and the United Kingdom.
