Sword-Wielding ‘Ninja’ Attacks, Injures Two Special Operations Soldiers at California Airport

A man wielding a katana sword dressed as a ‘ninja’ allegedly attacked two US Army special operations soldiers last month, confronting the men at California’s Inyokern Airport in the Mohave Desert.
According to a military incident surrounding the attack, which occurred on September 18th, a man in ninja garb briefly questioned a staff sergeant of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, before slashing him with a katana sword, wounding him in the knee and leg.
26 special operations soldiers later took shelter in an airport building after the sword attack, with the ninja going on to allegedly injure a captain of the unit when he threw a chunk of concrete through a window. The soldiers, who belong to a unit that specializes in helicopter rappel operations, probably wouldn’t have been carrying live ammunition during the training event at a civilian airport.
When Ridgeport, California police officers arrived at the scene, they describe deploying non-lethal rounds in an attempt to apprehend Rivera, who continued to resist arrest and threaten law enforcement with his seemingly authentic katana weapon. He was ultimately arrested away from the airport after fleeing the scene. The two soldiers injured were taken to an area hospital and received stitches for their injuries.
35-year old ‘ninja’ Gino Rivera is facing a litany of serious criminal charges for his alleged attack on the soldiers, including attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a weapon, brandishing a weapon with the intent to resist or prevent an arrest, vandalism, and obstruct/delay a peace officer in the discharge of their duties, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office.
Rivera’s being held on a $125,000 bond with a preliminary hearing scheduled for October 25th.
