Tennessee Governor Bill Lee Announces He Won’t Resurrect Red Flag Order in 2024

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee recently announced that he will not re-introduce a red flag gun confiscation order that he promoted earlier in 2023 when the state legislature reconvenes in January 2024.

Red flag gun confiscation orders grant judges the power to temporarily confiscate firearms from an individual if they are allegedly a risk to themselves or others without any form of due process.

This legislation was pushed in the aftermath of the Covenant School massacre.

He put forward draft legislation in the final hours of the legislative session in April, and repeatedly called on elected officials to take it up, declaring  “we owe Tennesseans a vote.”

Lee subsequently called a special session of the legislature to take on the issue. In response, pro-gun organizations nationwide implemented a robust social media and grassroots lobbying campaign to ensure that such legislation would not be passed.

On November 20, 2023, the governor said to reporters that he does not plan on re-introducing his red flag proposal when the legislature comes back in session in January.

That said, the fight to preserve gun rights in the Volunteer State is far from over. Lee has already demonstrated a willingness to introduce anti-gun legislation, so pro-gun advocates in the state will have to be on guard.

Yes, Tennessee is a very pro-gun state as evidenced by its 12th place ranking according to Guns & Ammo magazine’s best states for gun owners rankings.

However, threats to our liberties can come in unconventional forms so it behooves us to stay eternally vigilant against these threats.
