Texas Congressman Chip Roy Believes Cartels are in Control of the Southern Border

According to Texas Congressman Chip Roy, Mexican cartels are raking in billions of dollars from drug trafficking, human smuggling, and exploiting the U.S’s lax border policies.

Per a report by Charlotte Cuthbertson and Steve Lance of the Epoch Times, Border Patrol agents arrested over 1.3 million illegal immigrants entering Texas from Mexico in 2021. In addition, hundreds of thousands of migrants weren’t captured.

Seizures of fentanyl have dramatically increased, while overdose deaths in the United States dramatically increased.

“We have 100,000 Americans die from opioid poisonings. They’re not really overdoses—they’re poisonings,” Roy said while making an appearance on NTD’s “Capitol Report” on January 28, 2022.

“China is moving it through Mexico, cartels are making money, China is getting empowered, America’s getting hammered—all because this administration refuses to do its job of securing the border, Roy added.”

According to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection report, there was a 1,066% increase in fentanyl confiscated at South Texas ports of entry during fiscal year 2021.

Cartels have amassed significant power along the border. They’ve done so by tapping into human smuggling and drug trafficking activities in the last year.

Cartels usually send large groups through in one part of the border to tie up Border Patrol resources. This leaves areas close by unpatrolled and susceptible to illicit transportation operations, according to an account from Rodney Scott, a former U.S. Border Patrol chief.

“They simply overwhelm agents with those massive numbers, and that creates other areas where there’s no law enforcement at all,” Scott said to “Capitol Report” on December 16.

“That’s where they’re bringing the narcotics, the criminal aliens, the people that want to avoid arrest for whatever reason, and they’re just pouring across at will. This is a crisis, and it is real.”

Illegal immigrants must pay a cartel to enter the US and the amount generally varies on the country of origin and destination in the United States.

Usually, the illegal aliens don’t have the money and will go into the United States with a massive debt to the cartel.

“These are human beings. They are put into the labor or sex trafficking trade and they’re basically held as slaves to enrich the worst elements of our society—cartels, but also just illegal illicit organizations that are perfectly happy to use the cartel network to get the people that they’re going to abuse. It’s absolutely horrific,” Roy stated.

“How is the most powerful nation in the history of the world allowing our borders to be operationally controlled by cartels, while Democrats pat themselves on the back for compassion, using asylum as an excuse for wide-open borders that do nothing good for the American people?, Roy asked?”

Roy recently introduced a bill that designates two cartels as terrorist organizations over the past two congressional legislative sessions.

The bill instructs the State Department to classify the Reynosa/Los Metros faction of the Gulf Cartel and the Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas as foreign terrorist organizations. In addition, the bill requires the State Department to create a report on those cartels, on top of other cartels that meet the criteria.

So far, Roy’s bill has 45 co-sponsors, all which are Republicans.

Roy is not sanguine about the prospects of this bill

“They don’t give a rat’s rear end about securing the border or trying to go after cartels,” Roy stated.

Roy stressed the need for US authorities to pursue cartels and reassert operational control of the southern border.

Roy is correct in noting that the Biden administration will not bother to pass his legislation. The Biden administration is fully committed to open borders.

So it will take populist Republicans to bring border security to the fore of political discussion. This is a far more important issue than trying to get the US mixed up in a potential nuclear conflict with countries like Russia over Ukraine.
