Texas Governor Greg Abbott Pardons Army Veteran Convicted of Shooting Armed Black Lives Matter Lunatic
On May 16, 2024, Texas Governor Greg Abbott pardoned an Uber driver who shot and killed a gun-toting Black Lives Matter (BLM) agitator during a riot that kicked off in July 2020.
United States Army Sergeant Daniel Perry was slapped with a murder conviction in April 2023 despite the lead detective reaching the conclusion the shooting was in self-defense. Perry was initially sentenced to 25 years in prison. Abbott promised to pardon Perry after the conviction. On May 16, Abbott announced via press release his acceptance of a recommendation by the state’s Board of Pardons and Paroles for a complete pardon.
“The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles conducted an exhaustive review of U.S. Army Sergeant Daniel Perry’s personal history and the facts surrounding the July 2020 incident and recommended a Full Pardon and Restoration of Full Civil Rights of Citizenship,” Abbott declared in the release. “Among the voluminous files reviewed by the Board, they considered information provided by the Travis County District Attorney, the full investigative report on Daniel Perry, plus a review of all the testimony provided at trial.”
Perry shot and killed 28-year-old Garrett Foster in self-defense. Foster approached him wielding an AK-47-style rifle during a riot in July 2020 that swept across Austin, Texas. Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza initially took Abbott to task for announcing his plan to intervene in the indecent in a press release disseminated in April 2023
“Texas has one of the strongest ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive District Attorney,” Abbott stated in the press release, making an indirect reference to Garza’s attempt to press charges against Perry. “I thank the Board for its thorough investigation, and I approve their pardon recommendation.”
“The board and the governor have put their politics over justice,” Garza declared in response to the pardon, per The Associated Press. “They should be ashamed of themselves. Their actions are contrary to the law and demonstrate that there are two classes of people in this state where some lives matter and some lives do not. They have sent a message to Garrett Foster’s family, to his partner, and to our community that his life does not matter.”
At first, it looked like anarcho-tyranny was about to prevail in this case. However, Texas has a governor that nominally believes in the right to self-defense. Whatever flaws he may have, Abbott did the right thing here by pardoning Perry.
Such bold leadership is needed in times when the Left is playing for keeps. Letting leftists continue to gain ground will only put rights like the Second Amendment on the chopping block.
At this point in the game, compromising with unhinged political rivals is not an option.
