Texas is Currently the Largest State to Prohibit Transgender Care for Minors

On June 1, 2023, Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Friday signed legislation that prohibits transgender healthcare which included puberty blockers and hormone therapy for minors in the state. In signing this bill into law, Texas became the largest of the 20 states to have banned transgender procedures for minors.
Republican elected officials nationwide have promoted similar legislative acts, claiming that they do not trust the consensus held by leading medical associations that endorse transgender healthcare as a necessary and even life-saving procedure for sexually confused youth.
Texas is the second most-populous U.S. state and has roughly 29,800 transgender minors from the ages of 13 to 17, per the Williams Institute of UCLA.
The Texas law features exceptions for minors who started going through treatment prior to June 1 or for individuals who attended 12 or more sessions of mental health counseling or psychotherapy for a period of at least six months.
The law noted the aforementioned patients “shall wean off the prescription drug over a period of time.” Supporters of these legislative acts claim the government must intervene in these matters due to the fear that these treatments will bring about irreparable harm to minors. Moreover, these lawmakers assert that children are not able to rationally consent to such decisions.Â
Indeed, there comes a point when conservatives must start proactively legislating in favor of their interests. They must rid themselves of the obsession of remaining principled when such behavior will lead to their political demise.Â
The time for debating is over. It’s time that conservatives start asserting themselves legislatively and taking the fight directly to the Left.
