Texas State Senator Threatens to Cut Funding From Universities that Undermine DEI Law

Following reports that several Texas universities are trying to circumvent a state law requiring all public colleges and universities to get rid of any internal DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs, Republican State Senator Brandon Creighton is leading the charge against these underhanded ways to undermine these laws.

Creighton is the author of Senate Bill 17, which effectively bans Texas universities from hiring employees to “perform the duties” of a DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) office and is designed to hinder any promotion of activities, measures, or training “designed or implemented in reference to race, color, or ethnicity.”

On top of that, the measure bans universities from mandating ideological oath statements connected to race, equity, antiracism, and social justice.

Creighton revealed to Texas Scorecard that if these universities fail to comply with the new state law, the Texas Senate will consider cutting funds from universities breaking this law. He said the following:

“Now that SB 17 is law, I’m confident that Texas public colleges and universities can return to their core mission of innovation and education—and if they do not, the Texas Senate will be resolute in enforcement of this legislation, which includes provisions for university funding clawbacks, should there be violations.”

Despite the new law going into effect on January 1, 2024 multiple Texas universities have said they will continue the same DEI practices albeit under different names.

According to information from Texas Tech University (TTU), several “support services” were moved to other departments, despite the college closing the DEI office.

“We’re gonna move certain support services into certain areas that align with really who they served and what they did,” declared TTU’s President Lawrence Schovanec.

Although TTU shuttered the DEI and LGBTQIA Education and Engagement offices, the university’s Black Cultural Center was renamed to the Student Enrichment Center. Per the university, several of the activities, resources, and support that students obtained from the closed departments have been moved to other offices such as the Provost Office, Mental Health Wellness, and Financial Aid.

The Left doesn’t care about the law which is not a shock. These people are only in the game of political domination and they will do whatever it takes to win, political norms be damned.

Creighton is right to threaten the cutting of funds from universities. If anything, stronger measures — such as the summary firing of the staff, administrators, and other individuals  — will need to be implemented to fully contain the Left and its dastardly political antics.
