The United States Government Deploys Nuclear Weapons in Britain For First Time In 15 Years

The United States has plans of deploying nuclear weapons to the United Kingdom for the first time in 15 years. The Telegraph reported this by alluding to Pentagon documents.

This report contended that Russia will view this move as an “escalation.”

Per Pentagon procurement contract, the US will deploy B61-12 nuclear warheads at RAF Lakenheath, a base located in Suffolk, England. The US previously withdrew its nukes out of the UK in 2008. With the US redeploying these nukes, it’s becoming clear the Anglo-American axis is escalating tensions with Russia.

The Telegraph reported that Russian authorities have indicated that a US deployment of nuclear weapons to the UK would be an “escalation” that would compel it to take “compensating counter-measures.”

The US currently has nukes installed in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Turkey as part of NATO’s nuclear sharing program. Dave DeCamp of Antiwar.com put some perspective to this latest move to deploy nukes in the UK. He observed that Russia announced it was deploying nuclear weapons to Belarus as tensions mounted in NATO’s proxy war against Russia in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin alluded to NATO’s nuclear sharing program as the justification for installing nukes in Belarus.

The British have their own nuclear arsenal and revealed in 2021 that they would be expanding it. At the time, British authorities announced that they would be increasing the ceiling of its nuclear warhead arsenal from 180 to 240. Moreover, they announced that they would no longer be publishing information about the number of warheads it actively operates.

A once mighty empire that forever shaped international politics, the United Kingdom is now a mere vassal state of the American-led NATO order. Simply out of a fanatic zeal to confront Russia, the UK has rendered itself a slave to the US’s geopolitical whims.

Such is the fate of all US allies who are captured by universalist foreign policy proclivities.

Will self-respecting members of the British political class step up and challenge this foreign policy conventional wisdom?

Time will only tell.
