Thomas Massie Demands that Congress Read the Bills

On January 6, 2024, Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie posted a link to a United States House vote on H.R. 3325 that eventually became law on August 5, 2021.

The bill in question was designed to “To award four congressional gold medals to the United States Capitol Police and those who protected the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.”

Only 21 members of the House — all Republicans — voted against this bill, with Massie being one of them.

Unbeknownst to many of the House members who voted for this bill, this bill had language that described the January 6th protestors as “insurrectionists.”

Massie brought attention to this in a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. He tweeted the following:

“Read the bills!

Did you know all but 21 US Representatives voted for a bill written by Nancy Pelosi that called the January 6th protestors “insurrectionists”?

I voted No and took a lot of heat for it. Here’s a link to the bill that became law in 2021: https://congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/3325/text

Indeed, Congress has a penchant of passing gargantuan bills filled with many nasty provisions that politicians initially don’t get wind of. That’s because no one in Congress reads legislation.

With respect to the January 6 storming of the US Capitol, the overwhelming majority of those in attendance at the protests were peaceful. That’s an undeniable fact that members of the ruling class don’t want to concede.

Sadly, the January 6 as an insurrection narrative dominates political pundit discourse. To make matters worse, only 21 Republicans voted against the aforementioned bill with insurrectionist lanague. This is unacceptable and a telltale sign that members of Congress don’t read bills.

Hopefully, other members of Congress begin heeding Massie’s advice and start reading the bills put in front of them.
