Trump on Running Against Ron DeSantis in 2024: “I’d Beat Him”
President Donald Trump addressed the prospect of potentially running against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in a 2024 GOP primary on Sunday, predicting that he’d defeat the Florida Republican governor if he decided to challenge him in a presidential primary.
“If I faced him, I’d beat him like I would beat everyone else,” said Trump of facing DeSantis, according to an excerpt of a Yahoo interview set to be published Monday. President Trump also predicted that any other Republican challengers would drop out of the race if he announced he was running.
“If I do run, I think that I’ll do extremely well,” said Trump of a potential 2024 comeback campaign. Trump has consistently suggested he’s interested in running, although he’s been careful not to formally announce any campaign for the presidency. Polling has generally shown Trump with a dominant lead in any 2024 GOP primary-often an electoral majority- with DeSantis the only other candidate to attract any significant support.
Trump also polls much better against Joe Biden in a general election matchup, with alternative Republicans such as Ron DeSantis down big to the geriatric Democrat. Trump nearly beat Joe Biden in 2020, having been saddled with a once-in-a-century pandemic Biden had promised to defeat, but has failed to.
DeSantis has governed in a fashion that’s made him appealing to Trump supporters, becoming one of the first governors to seriously challenge arbitrary CDC federal demands and rejecting the notion of placing coronavirus rules on the people of his state. Some Conservative Inc. linked operatives have suggested DeSantis would be a suitable replacement for Trump, raising suspicions about the politician in some America First circles. However, Trump has signaled he’d consider appointing DeSantis as his Vice Presidential running mate.
