Unhinged Criminal Candidate Eric Deters Files Lawsuit Challenging Thomas Massie and Liberty Candidate TJ Roberts Candidacies
On February 21, 2024, Eric C. Deters — a former Kentucky gubernatorial candidate who is currently running for the state’s 4th congressional district while on probation for his illegal pursuit of his underage nephew — announced his decision to file a lawsuit to prevent Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie from running for office in 2024.
Deters provided the complaint to Kentucky news outlet, LINK NKY, arguing that his rival, Massie, should be removed from the race due to how House District 66 candidate TJ Roberts lost his house to a fire, claiming this invalidates Roberts as a witness to Massie’s candidate filing on December 18, 2023.
The Kentucky Secretary of State’s office stipulates that two witnesses who both live in the same district as the candidate are needed for political candidate filings in Kentucky.
In a statement that he published on February 21, 2024, Roberts set the record straight about the legal ordeal Massie is facing and how it also threatens to loop him in:
My opponent and his allies are attempting to use “lawfare” to remove me and Thomas Massie from the ballot, capitalizing on the tragic fire that destroyed my home last year.
Roberts highlighted how his house was burned down in a fire in 2023:
As many of you already know, I tragically lost my house to a fire in 2023. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and we had insurance, which allowed us to fully rebuild. My family’s been through nothing short of hell, and it is disgusting that the Establishment is teaming up with anyone willing to use this personal tragedy for personal and political gain.
The candidate for Kentucky HD 66 highlighted the pettiness of his Republican rival Ed Massey and how he’s willing to team up with Deters to use legal trickery to undermine the otherwise legitimate candidacies of Roberts and Massie:
I was honored to sign Thomas Massie’s paperwork to file to run for reelection. However, my opponent is now teaming up with a convict, who is on probation for pursuing and attempting an illicit interaction with his underage nephew to exploit the greatest tragedy of my life since the death of my father, by filing a lawsuit to remove Thomas Massie from the ballot by disqualifying my residency status, in a futile effort to also disqualify me from my election.
Roberts likened the attacks he is currently facing to those that former President Donald Trump has had to put up with in the last year:
The lawsuit, filed one day after my opponent launched his first personal attack against me, asserts brazenly false claims and misrepresents the law. It is reminiscent of the illegal efforts to ruin former President Donald Trump through lawfare and disqualify him. It is worth noting that both my opponent and the plaintiff in this action, who is a convict, gave Hillary Clinton a lot of money in her far left campaign for president. This is not the first time my opponent has attempted to remove a conservative candidate from the ballot; he sued his conservative opponent in 2018 in a similar effort.
In a concluding statement, Roberts said:
Despite establishment efforts, our campaign is taking off. I will continue to fight for my right to be on the ballot while not letting this distract from our work to get the America First message to every voter in District 66. Thomas Massie and I will prevail against the swamp’s desperate tactics of my corrupt opponent.
Thomas Massie told The Cincinnati Enquirer the following about Deters’ antics: “After his (Deters’) disastrous failed gubernatorial campaign, he has apparently convinced himself that the only way he can win an election is by employing the same kind of dirty tricks the Left is currently attempting to keep Donald Trump off the ballot.”
When contacted for comment on his alleged involvement in this lawsuit, Ed Massey did not return a response. Screenshots of since-deleted tweets, however, appear to show Ed Massey admit to involvement in the lawsuit to remove Thomas Massie, and by implication TJ Roberts, from the ballot.
Another since-deleted Tweet appears to show Ed Massey reaffirm his endorsement of Eric Deters, who is on probation for his illegal pursuit of his underage nephew. FEC records reveal that both Eric Deters and Ed Massey have donated to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.
Thomas Massie pushed the envelope even further on February 26, when he filed a motion to impose sanctions under Kentucky Civil Rule 11 against Deters for the false claims he is using to try to remove him from this congressional race.
Overall, what Massie and Roberts are going through is another sign of how petty the ruling class is becoming. They’re turning to the most despotic of tactics to try to defeat their opponents. They know full well they can’t win in a clean fight against pro-liberty candidates.
This is just a sign of our desperate times and liberty conservatives must be ready for their rivals to play dirty against them.
