A Republican congressman refused to call on House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) to fund a border wall, one of President Donald J. Trump’s main agenda item, when confronted on Thursday.
At first, Rep. Pete King (R-NY) ignored the question. When pressed, he said he would vote to fund the wall, but would not call for a vote on the subject.
It was a typical political weasel move – King tried to absolve himself of responsibility by passing the buck to someone else to call for wall funding.
The idea of a southern border wall propelled Trump to victory in 2016. It is popular among King’s constituents, yet for political purposes he is not bold enough to call for it to be built.
His excuse for not calling for the funding? King said wants to avoid a government shutdown.
