Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin Vetoes Democrats’ Assault Weapons Prohibition

On March 26, 2024, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin vetoed Virginia Democrats “assault weapons” prohibition in addition to several other Democrat-supported gun control measures.
Back in late January, Virginia Democrats were pushing forward an “assault weapons” prohibition. According to a Breitbart News report published in early February, Virginia House Democrats’ “assault firearm” prohibition singled out semi-automatic centerfire pistols, such as the 9mm or 45 ACP, if the pistols in question take a detachable magazine and have a threaded barrel.
AWR Hawkins of Breitbart News noted the following about semi-automatic centerfire pistols:
Semiautomatic centerfire pistols are wildly popular among concealed carriers and target shooters. Some of the most popular semiautomatic centerfire pistols include the 9mm, 45 ACP, and 10mm, and a pistol chambered in any of those three rounds could have been banned in Virginia over a threaded barrel if Democrats got their way.
Youngkin ended up vetoing the “assault weapons” prohibition. In a quote that the Richmond Times-Dispatch got from Youngkin, the Virginia Governor declared in a statement: “The Constitution precludes the Commonwealth from prohibiting a broad category of firearms widely embraced for lawful purposes, such as self-defense. Despite this, certain members of the General Assembly have pursued legislation banning most contemporary semiautomatic firearms and specific ammunition-feeding devices.”
Virginia has turned into one of the most anti-gun states in the nation over the last decade thanks to Democrats tipping the state’s political orientation to the anti-gun column. Virginia is ranked in 35th place for Guns & Ammo magazine’s best states for gun owners rankings.
In light of Youngkin’s veto, gun owners in Old Dominion can breathe a temporary sigh of relief that their state has not been fully captured by the gun controllers. Nevertheless, the fight is far from over.
Gun owners will have to remain vigilant about the next series of threats that the ruling class will try to unleash against the Second Amendment.
Getting caught asleep at the wheel will inevitably result in the loss of further rights.
