WHO Director General Moans About “Conspiracy Theories” Being Spread Online About WHO Pandemic Treaty
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General World Health Organization (WHO), believes that conspiracy theories and misinformation have grown rampant online.
Tedros said the following: “We find ourselves in a time where fake news, lies, conspiracy theories, misinformation and disinformation are rampant.” The WHO leader made these remarks at a time when the United Nations is calling on countries worldwide to agree to “the pandemic accord.”
The document outlines the tools to tackle “the next pandemic,” but goes beyond health issues. Didi Rankovic of the Reclaim the Net said that free speech watchdogs have warned that the agreement “also aims to introduce surveillance tools, effectively facilitate censorship, and undermine a country’s sovereignty in the decision-making processes during a health crisis by transferring a number of powers to the UN.”
Global elites have been frightened by the counter narratives put forward by alternative media and dissident pundits throughout the wuhan virus pandemic. For that reason, politicians, transnational NGOs, media pundits, academics, etc. have all been calling for tougher measures to restrict speech.
These people ultimately fear anyone who challenges the status quo, which is they try to use public and private mechanisms to muzzle this discourse. Liberty advocates will have to be on guard against these threats which are only going to dial up as the years go by.
