Why Are Republicans Backing Joe Biden’s War in Yemen?

On January 26, 2024, 14 House Democrats and 8 House Republicans put their signatures on a letter to President Joe Biden manifesting “serious concerns” about what they deemed as “unauthorized” strikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen. In the bipartisan group of lawmakers’ view, Biden’s recent series of strikes in Yemen represented a violation of the United States Constitution.

The elected officials called on the Biden regime to “seek authorization from Congress before involving the U.S. in another conflict in the Middle East, potentially provoking Iran-backed militias … and risking escalation of a wider regional war.”

“As representatives of the American people, Congress must engage in robust debate before American service members are put in harm’s way and before more U.S. taxpayer dollars are spent on yet another war in the Middle East,” the representatives added.

Some of the most prominent signers of the letter include Missouri Congresswoman Cori Bush, South Carolina Congresswoman Nancy Mace , Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green, Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Arizona Congressman Paul Gosar, and Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie.

This letter was sent shortly after a similar letter was signed by Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, Indiana Senator Todd Young , Connecticut Chris Murphy, and Utah Senator Mike Lee previously.

“What is your Administration’s understanding of ‘self-defense’ in the context of these strikes,” they inquired, referencing Biden’s admission that the strikes have done nothing to deter the Houthis.

The Biden regime’s strikes against both the Houthis and other Iran-connected militia groups as a response to attacks on US forces and international shipping vessels has sparked a heated congressional debate over presidential war powers.

Independent journalist Michael Tracey was particularly surprised by how little pushback have made against Biden’s foreign policy machinations.

On January 29, 2024, he tweetedWow! 19 House Dems and only 8 GOP signed a letter declaring Biden’s strikes in Yemen a violation of the Constitution, and demanding he seek authorization before proceeding further. When it comes to bombing the Middle East, Republicans have very little interest in reining in Biden.”

Republicans continue to be some of the dumbest hawks in Congress. Despite the populist shift in the GOP, there are still residual neoconservative/interventionist elements within the party.

These neocon elements need to be purged out of the party if it wants to move in a more realist, non-interventionist direction.
