Congress to Reconvene Tonight and Certify Election Results, Says Nancy Pelosi

Nancy Pelosi has announced that Congress will reconvene Wednesday night at 8:00pm eastern and finish the work they began before being interrupted by throngs of pro-Trump protesters swarming the Capitol.

This includes both the House of Representatives, of which Nancy Pelosi is the speaker, as well as the Senate.

“Today, a shameful assault was made on our democracy. It was anointed at the highest level of government,” Pelosi wrote in a letter. “It cannot, however, deter us from our responsibility to validate the election of Joe Biden.”

“To that end, in consultation with Leader Hoyer and Whip Clyburn and after calls to the Pentagon, the Justice Department and the Vice President, we have decided we should proceed tonight at the Capitol once it is cleared for use. Leader Hoyer will be sending out more guidance later today.”

The US Capitol building is now secure after police struggled for hours to contain the influx of protesters. Many protesters were able to breach the Capitol, but video footage appeared to show that police had removed at least one fence barrier that kept the protesters at bay. Regardless, it is clear that police were completely outnumbered and had no other way to deal with the situation than to stand down.

Many members of Congress were evacuated from the floor as a result of the breach, as well as Vice President Mike Pence.
