In a last ditch effort to revive a bill that would save veterans’ lives by giving them better access to private healthcare options outside of the VA, a number of Republicans attempted to place it in the omnibus bill. But that effort was killed by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and many are claiming that she only did it to make President Trump look bad.
The bill in question, known as the “Caring for Our Veterans Act,” or care for short, would remove barriers currently in place for veterans looking for healthcare. Currently, there are veterans who are waiting months for care that they need, and the VA is the cause for those issues. Giving veterans the ability to look for free-market solutions outside of the government mandated system would save lives.
But as Dan Caldwell, the executive director of Concerned Veterans for America explains that “Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Rep. Tim Walz (D-MN), the senior Democrat on the House VA Committee, have blocked some common sense reforms which in the past they’ve agreed to.”
Caldwell goes on to explain that “this is simply about denying President Trump a political win at the expense of veterans.”
