Despite ‘Record-High’ Migrant Encounters, Biden Still On Track To End Title 42
Thanks to new filings from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Fox News’ Bill Melugin reported migrant encounters at the southern border hit a record high in April.
BREAKING: There were 234,088 migrants encountered at the Southern border in April, per a DHS court filing today. That’s the highest number in DHS history.
117,989 migrants were released into the U.S. in April.
113,248 were removed, including 96,908 expelled via Title 42. @FoxNews— Bill Melugin (@BillFOXLA) May 16, 2022
“There were 234,088 migrants encountered at the Southern border in April,” Melguin said. “That’s the highest number in DHS history.”
Of that total, 96,908 migrants were expelled via Title 42. The soon-to-end Trump-era policy that allows Border Patrol to turn away migrants at the border because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Notably, 210,000 illegal immigrants were caught during March, which was the previous leading number for any one month during the Biden presidency.
The policy is scheduled to end next week on May 23rd, with many Americans already frustrated with the president for failing to extend it. Especially considering he has publicly said, “this pandemic isn’t over.”
On top of that, migrant encounters at the southern border continue to break records without any signs of slowing down. Nor any plans from the White House to stop the consistent inflow.
This means there have been 1,026,460 encounters in the first 6 months of FY' 22, which began on 10/1. In the first 6 months of record setting FY'21, there were only 570,826 encounters.
This means the first 6 months of FY'22 are up 79% over the first 6 months of FY'21 @FoxNews— Bill Melugin (@BillFOXLA) April 16, 2022
Now, experts warn that the US could expect to see an even bigger “surge” of illegal immigrants if Title 42 were to be lifted. Some officials have even estimated an increase of up to 18,000 encounters per day.
“Revoking Title 42 will create an unprecedented surge at the southern border and it will overwhelm law enforcement agencies and non-governmental organizations as well,” Republicans said in a lawsuit intended to keep Title 42 in place.
“The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, (DHS), estimates getting rid of Title 42 will result in as many as 18,000 migrants per day – which could mean 540,000 migrants in a single month.”
The southern border crisis is a hot-button issue Americans are not taking lightly, with even some Democrats agreeing that rescinding Title 42 would pose irreversible and drastic consequences.
Rep. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) said, “Right now, we have a crisis on our southern border. Right now, this administration does not have a plan. I warned them about this months ago.”
“It’s going to be, to be honest, it’s going to be a crisis on top of a crisis,” he added.
According to a Fox News poll, the majority of American voters want President Joe Biden to maintain Title 42. And according to another poll, voters are “disgusted” by the current decision.
On one hand, Biden is routinely informing the nation that COVID-19 is here to stay, yet on the other, he’s allowing for our southern border to remain open.
The president has said he’s “working hard” to stop the surge of migrants. But it seems as if his policies are only making the problem worse.
