Los Angeles Homicides Increased by 39% Since 2019
According to a report by Jamie Joseph of The Epoch Times, homicides in Los Angeles for the first half of 2022 are up by 39% compared to the same period in 2019.
Data from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) showed 181 homicides that took place from January to July 2022. In the same period in 2021, there were 180 homicides. Furthermore, these figures stood at 140 in 2020 and 130 in 2019.
In the calendar year of 2021, LA experienced 397 homicides, the highest homicide total the city has experienced in 15 years. At the city’s current homicide rate for 2022, the homicide total for 2022 is projected to be at 362.
Total violent crime experienced a 6.9% increase over the course of 2021. Similarly, it grew by 13.7% since 2020.
“Areas of challenge continue to be our robberies, aggravated assaults,” LAPD Chief Michel Moore stated at a meeting of the Police Commission that was held on July 12, 2022. “Although in this last reporting period we did see improvements in both those categories versus property crime.”
In a previous meeting, Moore informed the commission that the current surge in the homicide rate is being propelled by gang-connected homicides of homeless individuals.
In the last year, there has been a 13.1% increase in property crimes.
Big cities nationwide are being afflicted by significant crime waves. For example, BLP previously reported that New Orleans is on pace to becoming the US’s murder capital in 2022.
Rising crime is no isolated trend nor a stroke of mere coincidence. It’s the product of bad public policies that empower criminals and allow them to easily prey on innocent populations.
The Right must take note of this and make sure to run on tough rule of law platforms. It’s the most pragmatic way of building popular electoral coalitions and making right-wing groups more in touch with the plight of people living in precarious urban environments.
