Nearly 1 in 2 French Citizens Say All Immigration – Both Legal and Illegal – Should be Reduced to Zero

As the issue of migration continues to be the central focus in France’s upcoming presidential election, a new survey has revealed that nearly half of French citizens say that all forms of immigration – both legal and illegal – should be reduced to zero.
The survey, carried out just six months ahead of the election by the CSA Institute for CNews, showed that 41 percent of participants say they’re in favor of halting all forms of immigration into France.
Perhaps most notably – but also unsurprisingly – the poll revealed a stark left-right divide on the issue. Those who see themselves as right of center were most likely to support the idea of ending every form of migration into the country at 72 percent. Conversely, 87 percent of respondents who self-identified with France’s various left-wing parties were opposed to the same idea.
On the right, voters of the nominally more radical National Rally party – led by Marine Le Pen – were most likely to support a total ban on immigration at 92 percent, while 63 percent of supporters of the center-right, pro-migration Republicans party reported being in favor of such a policy.
On the left, the idea was most ardently opposed to Green Party supporters at 93 percent, while 88 percent supporters of Macron’s anti-populist, pro-business La France Insoumise party, and 81 percent of Social Party supporters were also against the proposal.
Weeks ago, in what has been regarded as a clear attempt to court right-wing voters ahead of next year’s vote, President Macron’s administration announced that government would slash the number of visas granted to citizens from Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia since all three have largely refused to take back their citizens living illegally in France.
Macron’s liberal-globalist party isn’t the only party in France looking to steal voters from Marine Le Pen or Eric Zemmour. Michel Barnier, a top politician for the ostensibly conservative Republicans party who’s expected to run for president, was recently ridiculed for abandoning his long-held position on immigration after he proposed that immigration into France from outside of the EU should be paused for three to five years.
In the wake of Barnier’s statement, the UK’s Nigel Farage – the man who spearheaded the successful Brexit campaign – called him the “biggest hypocrite ever born”.
