New polling from Zogby International reveals a majority of Americans suspect that Joe Biden is in the early stages of dementia.

The poll, which was released Wednesday, shows that a majority of 55% of Americans believe that it’s “more likely” that Biden is in the early stages of dementia.

A majority of independents(56%) believe Biden is suffering from dementia, and a strong majority of Republicans(77%) also suspect the former Vice President has cognitively declined. African Americans, one of Biden’s strongest constituencies in the Democratic Primary, are surprisingly amenable to the theory, with 43% of the demographic admitting that Biden appeared to be suffering from the condition.

The poll was conducted with a sample of 1,007 likely voters across the United States.

Biden has frequently appeared to be confused and disoriented during campaign events and media appearances, leading a substantial section of the public to question the longtime Democratic Senator and former Vice President’s mental acuity.

Discussion of Biden’s fitness for office has largely been silenced during the national coronavirus epidemic and George Floyd race riots. Biden’s campaign has starkly limited his in-person campaign appearances, with the former Vice President generally not appearing in public for more than an hour at a time.

If elected, Joe Biden would be the oldest President ever to be sworn in on Inauguration day, entering office at the ripe age of 78.
