Rand Paul Has Endorsed a Pro-Abortion, Open-Borders Globalist Over a Fellow Republican

In a shock move, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has endorsed Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate in New Mexico over the Republican candidate, Mick Rich. Johnson is the former Governor of New Mexico, and ran for president as a Libertarian in both 2012 and 2016.
While Johnson and Paul do align on fiscal and privacy issues, that’s where the similarities seem to end. When looking at past public statements, and his record as Governor of New Mexico, it is clear that Johnson is a pro-abortion, open-borders supporting globalist who is clueless on most issues, especially foreign policy.
Throughout his entire career, Johnson has been consistently opposed abortion restrictions. While he has always been opposed to late term abortion, he has still contended it’s a state’s rights issue. If elected to the U.S. Senate that means he would be unlikely to support any pro-life measures.
For that reason alone Sen. Paul’s endorsement seems confusing, especially with his timing. Just last week, while fighting to defund Planned Parenthood he questioned whether his Republican colleagues are really pro-life. With his endorsement of Johnson, the same could be asked of him.
On the issue of immigration, Johnson goes even further than even many Democrats in support for open borders. In an interview with Townhall, Johnson ranted with the ferocity of a social-justice lunatic over the use of the term “illegal immigrant,” calling it “incendiary.” He also expressed his full support for open borders, stating:
“My vision of the border with Mexico is that a truck from the United States going into Mexico and a truck coming from Mexico into the United States will pass each other at the border going 60 miles an hour. Yes, we should have open borders.”
But perhaps the most troubling of the reasons Paul purports to support Johnson is his belief that he will be a leader for “common sense foreign policy is sorely needed in the United States Senate.”
While it is true that Johnson claims to support a more non-interventionist foreign policy, he has proven that he doesn’t understand foreign policy and can be easily persuaded away from his proclaimed principles. In 2012, almost certainly after watching the debunked “Kony 2012” video, he came out in support of sending U.S. troops to Uganda to fight child soldiers in the Lords Resistance Army.
On top of that, Johnson has been extremely critical of President Trump. After all, he did challenge Trump as a Libertarian during the 2016 election. Johnson has also gone so far as to call Trump a “p***y.”
It is not clear if this endorsement will create a rift in the relationship between Paul and President Trump. In recent months, Paul has made great strides towards supporting Trump on many important issues, and has forged a strong relationship with him.
Overall, this is sure to be an extremely disappointing moment for any Trump supporter who had faith in Rand Paul.
