REPORT: Ron DeSantis Believes Backing Trump 2024 is “Too Much To Ask”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been quoted as describing the prospect of backing a tentative 2024 Donald Trump campaign for President as “too much to ask,” in what could be the first real sign he intends to challenge the 45th president in the GOP primary.
According to reporting from the New York Times this week, DeSantis has fired back at Trump in private conversations with his own advisors, after reporting indicating that Trump views DeSantis as “dull” and lacking in personal charisma. Some Republicans have proposed that DeSantis is uniquely suited to challenge Trump in a 2024 primary, although polling of a tentative contest consistently shows Trump dominating, even securing a majority of support in some cases.
DeSantis has also reportedly described Trump as “uncharacteristically out of step with the hard-line elements of his party’s base,” in what may amount to a reference to Trump’s position on coronavirus vaccines. Both Trump and DeSantis nominally support the vaccines, but Trump has proven far more willingness to defend the safety and efficacy of the medicine, even going so far as to imply that DeSantis is “gutless” for going dark on the matter.
Trump has reportedly cited DeSantis’ refusal to speak more candidly about his intentions to wage or forego a 2024 presidential campaign, predicting that he’d beat him handily in the event that DeSantis were to challenge him.
“In the context of the 2024 election, he usually gives DeSantis a pop in the nose in the middle of that type of conversation,” said one source reportedly familiar with Trump’s views on his own state governor.
