Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert Considers a Run for Texas Attorney General
According to a report by Local Spectrum Local News, Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert is considering a run for the position of Texas Attorney General.
The current field of Republicans running for Attorney General is pretty stacked. Gohmert said he would throw his hat in the ring if he can raise $1 million in the next week.
“We’re running out of time,” he said to supporters in a video where he made his announcement. “If I’ve got a million bucks or more, I am all in. I am going to be the hardest running candidate you’ve ever seen.”
The primary takes place on March 1, 2022 and candidates must file their paperwork by December 13, 2021.
Similar to other candidates in the primary field, Gohmert suggested he’d make incumbent Ken Paxton’s current legal problems a major focus of his campaign. Currently, the FBI is investigating Paxton over allegations of abuse of office and bribery. On top of that, Paxton has also been dealing with a securities fraud case since 2015.
In both instances, Paxton denies engaging in criminal behavior.
Gohmert suggested Republicans could lose to Democrats if Paxton receives the nomination.
“We’ve got to have an attorney general that’s undistracted by moral and legal issues of his own and who can get elected a year from now,” Gohmert said to a crowd of supporters.
Gohmert has been one of the most solid America First candidates in Texas’ congressional delegation. He has stood up for the unjustly imprisoned January 6 protesters, immigration patriotism, and election integrity.
Paxton is already squaring off against other big name opponents such as Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman, and State Representative Matt Krause.
A victory by Gohmert could see Texas finally have an America First political figure assume statewide office.
