Literal Fake News: USA Today Removes 23 Articles By Gabriela Miranda For Fabricated Sources

In a Thursday announcement, USA Today removed 23 articles from breaking news reporter Gabriela Miranda after she was caught fabricating sources. She has since resigned from the outlet after an audit exposed her journalist malpractice.

The audit came after USA Today received an external corrections request.

According to the outlet, “The audit revealed that some individuals quoted were not affiliated with the organizations claimed and appeared to be fabricated.”

“The existence of other individuals quoted could not be independently verified. In addition, some stories included quotes that should have been credited to others,” it added.

The 23 Miranda articles USA Today removed from its website and other platforms were determined that they did not meet “editorial standards.”

As many outlets like the Post Millenial have pointed out, USA Today is a fact-checking partner for Facebook and maybe even Twitter. And it is the type of organization the now failed Department of Homeland Security’s Disinformation Governance Board want Americans to trust.

Yet they have just been exposed for fabricated news.

What other stories have been pushed as fact thanks to disinformation and made-up sources?

This story from USA Today is eye-opening because it comes at a time when trust in the media amongst Americans is incredibly low.

Just yesterday, the White House announced a new federal task force called the “White House Task Force to Address Online Harassment and Abuse,” and Vice President Kamala Harris hosted its first meeting.

Similar to the failed “Ministry of Truth,” this task force poses familiar goals and intentions to what czar Nina Jankowicz was pushing for just a few weeks ago.

For example, one of the task force’s intentions includes, “enhancing and expanding data collection and research across the Federal Government to measure the costs, prevalence, exposure to, and impact of technology-facilitated gender-based violence.”

While another is “developing programs and policies to address the disproportionate impact of online harassment, abuse, and disinformation campaigns targeting women and LGBTQI+ individuals who are public and political figures.”

Will the task force be working to combat literal misinformation from corporate press outlets like USA Today? We wouldn’t hold our breath.

After all, we see this routine time and time again from big tech fact-checkers who complain endlessly that “democracy is under attack” because of conservative disinformation.

During a recent interview with MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, President Barack Obama’s former senior advisor and MSNBC guest Dan Pfeiffer ranted and raved about the dangers “misinformation from conservatives” poses on social media platforms. Then he urged Big Tech to tweak its algorithms.

We’ve heard similar rhetoric from liberals in recent months. But it’s safe to say none of those same people will even touch on this bombshell story from USA Today.
